Need To Play Poker
Dec Of Fifty-two Cards
It would hardly be poker without the cards. If you are playing with a brand-new deck, take out the Jokers and any miscellaneous cards, and then give the deck a good shuffle. If you are playing with a used deck, make sure it is complete and inspect the cards for any wear-and-tear that may 'mark' them. It’s a good idea to have more than one deck in case one gets damaged. Also, as one player is dealing a hand, the player to his right should prepare the other deck for the next game.
Poker Chips -
Real clay poker chips are expensive and more of a luxury than a necessity. Plastic chips will do just fine. However, these inexpensive sets usually have only three different colored chips. If you want more value-levels of chips, then you may need to go to a specialty store.
A Good Table With Ample Room
Snackes & Beverages - No one likes to lose, and no one likes to lose on an empty stomach, so keep some snacks around (nothing too messy). Note: Most professional players would never risk impairing their judgment by drinking alcohol while playing.
What You Need To Decide
Value Of Poker Chips - You can assign any value you choose to the chips. However, the colors usually correspond to a particular value sequence. For instance, in a regular set, the white chips correspond to the lowest value, the reds are in the middle, and the blue chips are worth the most. Sometimes there are also green, black, or purple chips. If you want to play for higher stakes you can go to the next level and play with green, black, and purple chips; purple is the king of chips.
Minimum/Maximum Bets & Number Of Raises - In order to keep “friendly” games friendly, it is best to set the betting amounts before you begin. For instance, if your lowest chip is worth ten cents, then the opening minimum bet can be set at ten cents. Depending on how much money you are playing with, a maximum bet can also be established. Before you begin play poker, you should also decide how many raises per player will be allowed during each hand.
Ranking Of Hand5
The Backbone Of Poker - Learning the ranking of hands is essential. Make sure you know what beats what before you start playing. Hands are listed in descending order from strongest to weakest:
Royal Flush - The five highest cards in sequence, all of the same suit.
Examples : AC, King C, Queen C, Jack C,10C
Ties: Two or more Royal Flushes split the pot.
Straight Flush - Five consecutive cards, all of the same suit, but not a Royal Straight Flush.
Example : 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H
TIES: Whoever has the highest card in his or her straight wins.
Four Of A Kind - Four cards of the same rank.
EXAMPLE : 5C, 5D, 5H, 5S, 10D(The fifth card is irrelevant.)
TIES: Whoever has the higher-ranking four of a kind wins. (Ex.: Four Jack beats four l0s.)
Full House - Three cards of the same rank plus two cards of the same rank.
Example : King C, King H, King S, 9H, 9S
TIES: Whoever has the higher-ranking three of a kind wins.
Fluse - Any five cards of the same suit.
Example : 4D, 5D, 10D, King D, AD
TIES: Whoever has a flush with the highest-ranking card wins. (If those are the same, compare the second-highest cards in the hands, and continue down to the fifth card, if necessary.)
Straight - Any five cards in sequence.
Example : 7S, 8H, 9H, 10C, Jack D
TIES: Whoever has the straight with the highest card wins.
The Status Of The Ace - In all games, unless the dealer declares otherwise, Aces are either high or low, but can never go “around the corner” to make a straight (K-A-2-3-4). Obviously, for most hands, you will want the Aces to be high. However, Aces can also be used for low straights (A-2-3-4-5).
