Managing Money at Poker
Set time limits and make them realistic
If you’re playing poker alone, consult your watch frequently. You’d be surprised how quickly the time passes when you’re watching that screen and concentrating on the cards. If you’re not alone, ask your DM or friends to check with you every 20 to 30 minutes in case you are ready to cut a losing streak short or better yet, to quit a winner Every time you do either of these two when prompted, you may gradually learn to do so on your own volition. You will learn to exercise your own will power. Let the power be with you.
Set cash limits end stick to them
First, divide your total poker stake proportionately for the number and length of your sessions. Take only enough money with you to cover a single session of play even with dices games. Some strategists have calculated the cost per hour for trying to win the jackpot. Their figures are usually based on the assumption that you also play back the coins that are dropped. According to Wong, you should average one royal flush ever 62 hours at that rate, but he includes the disclaimer that you may not hit one at all. Of course you might hit a royal on the first few hands or in the first hour. But don’t count on that either. The faster you play the faster you pay! Why rush through something you enjoy? When your stake for each session is gone, even if your time is not, that session is over. If you have to wait for someone else, treat yourself to & piece of pie, visit the gift shop, see a movie, or bowl a game — any distraction to avoid being tempted to press your luck!
Don’t poker play back your winnings
You can interpret this tip two ways. First, play out your original stake and keep the machine payout in a separate “winnings” fund to keep track of your net wins and losses over the long run or group of play periods. This method will also allow you to keep track of the payback percentages of the poker game machine you are playing. When a roll of quarters has been played, count up the “winnings” in the tray. See if the payback is 95%, 100% or hopefully... 125% or more! Second, you play back the coins paid at each session unless you are substantially ahead at any given moment, enough to justify quitting while you’re ahead. Either way, if you hit a royal, “squirrel” it away. If you hit four-of-a-kind several times or a straight flush (except on certain)- wild card machines), that is a substantial amount — enough to cash in and stash in your “winnings” pocket. Any win that is hand-paid by an attendant should definitely be put away.
Cash out your credits frequently
There are still machines at various locations that drop the coins with each win. However, most of the newer machines are credit types that accumulate all the wins until you push the “cash out”or “collect” button. Some players never let the credits accumulate and never play them without cashing out to reinsert for each play. This method is slower an makes your money seem to last longer. Others play them as they accumulate, seldom inserting more coins when there are credits to play. Still others bluffs to play the credits; they let them add up and out only when they are ready to quit ahead, quit even, or have played their whole stake a d all the credits as well and are broke. That’s the problem with credits — it’s too easy to play them all back before you realize how fact that total is approaching zero. When playing a credit machine, don’t mix your method of play. It is too easy to forget your credits if you do.
